Copper piping is the connection between your indoor and outdoor aircon units. It carries refrigerant in both liquid and gas form, and its condition directly affects how well your system cools. When piping fails, the result is a slow refrigerant leak that gets worse over time, costing you in repeated gas top-ups and declining performance until the system eventually cannot cool at all.

If you have topped up your aircon gas more than once in the past 12 months and the cooling still weakens within a few weeks, the piping likely has a leak at a joint or along the copper itself. Repeated top-ups without fixing the source of the leak are a waste of money.
Check any exposed sections of copper piping, particularly where they exit the wall or connect to the outdoor unit. Green oxidation or pitting on the surface indicates the copper has degraded and will eventually develop a leak.
Copper piping in Singapore is exposed to tropical humidity and temperature cycles continuously. After 8 to 10 years of service, the material can become brittle at joints and bends. If you are replacing your aircon units and the piping is over 10 years old, replacing it at the same time is almost always the right decision.
R22 and R32 operate at different pressures and are not compatible. If your old system runs on R22 and you are upgrading to a new R32 unit, the entire piping system must be replaced. The old R22 piping cannot safely handle the R32 operating pressure and any residual R22 oil in the pipes will contaminate the new system.
